Who it fits
Good fit for
This monitor suits remote workers and students who need a second screen for laptops. The 15.6-inch size offers enough space for spreadsheets or code without being unwieldy. You will appreciate the USB-C connection if you want to simplify your cable setup. The lightweight build makes it ideal for carrying in a backpack. It also works well with Macs and PCs for basic productivity tasks. If you travel frequently, the compact dimensions and protective sleeve add value.
Who should skip it
You should look elsewhere if you need high refresh rates for gaming. This panel is limited to 60Hz, which may feel sluggish for fast-paced titles. It also lacks touch capability in the base 1080p version. If you prefer a larger display, the 15.6-inch screen might feel small. The Mini-HDMI port requires an adapter for some devices, which adds complexity. Users needing 4K clarity will find the 1080p resolution insufficient for detailed media work.
Verdict: The ViewSonic VA1653 is a solid, lightweight option for basic portable productivity. It delivers reliable 1080p visuals in a package designed for easy transport.

Before you buy this monitor
You should verify your laptop’s USB-C port supports video output before purchasing. Not all USB-C ports transmit video signals. If your device lacks this feature, you will need the included Mini-HDMI cable and a separate power source. The monitor relies on passthrough power for full functionality, so ensure your charger provides sufficient wattage. Keep the protective sleeve handy when traveling to prevent screen scratches. This model fits well as a lightweight secondary display for students or remote workers who prioritize portability over high refresh rates. It complements heavier, larger screens by offering a quick, flexible extension. Check your operating system compatibility, as it supports Windows, macOS, and other platforms. Regularly clean the IPS panel with a microfiber cloth to maintain clarity. Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures to preserve battery life and panel integrity.
Check before you buy
- Confirm your laptop’s USB-C port supports video output
- Check if your charger provides enough power for passthrough
- Verify macOS or Windows compatibility with your setup
